Na língua dos gestos

Carollina Lauriano, 2023

In the Language of Gestures

Carollina Lauriano, 2023

In the opening paragraph of Mirror of Tauromachy, French writer and critic Michel Leiris confronts us with a problem: Just as God is the point of tangency between zero and infinity, eroticism assumes a similar movement, taking on the aspect of a kind of tangency that lasts no longer than a flash of lightning, and owes its brilliance to the fact that it lies at the crossroads of union and separation, accumulation and dissipation.

This movement described by Leiris makes me think about the encounter between Carlos Penna and Alice Dote and the series of wearable objets d'art developed through the collaboration between the designer and the visual artist. Moving between jewellery and the work of art, the pieces hold within them a kind of transgression, insofar as both refuse to fix them exclusively within one field or the other.

For Georges Bataille, transgression condenses and sets the permitted against the forbidden, with the erotic effect arising from this union. In other words, for both Leiris and Bataille, the erotic takes shape as a tension between two distinct places, thus producing an intention, a gesture, a desire. Here, it is important to understand eroticism as a concept that operates in the realm of the senses, rather than as the act itself.

We can therefore understand the erotic that surrounds the theme of this collaboration as the very act of creating. This first gesture of contact with “the other” incites the life drive. And here, the other also takes shape as the gesturality involved in developing the materiality of the pieces: the sensitive and sensual involvement of the hand that draws, erases, moulds and rubs against the surface that forms the basis of the objets d'art created by the pair.

Drawing on the autobiographical matrix that marks Alice Dote’s work, the pieces were created from drawings developed by the artist as extensions of her research into sexuality and eroticism. Beginning with the construction of self-portraits, the artist gradually dismembers the body until she arrives at images of ears, fingers and tongue — areas of the body understood as erogenous zones. Or, as Alice Dote explains in her notes on the creative process, Na língua dos gestos [In the Language of Gestures] takes shape through challenging a certain sexual politics of looking.

Then, as in a kind of correspondence established between them — and here I am interested in thinking of this exchange too as an erotic act, in the waiting for a response and in all the thoughts and tensions created by this absence/presence/doubt — Carlos Penna intervenes upon the etched plates developed by the artist, activating a new layer of perception over Alice’s drawings.

While Alice’s gesture possesses a certain rigidity characteristic of the precise, meticulous and obsessive gesture demanded by drawing and printmaking, the designer introduces the counterpoint of fluidity and malleability. This makes the collaboration operate by further sharpening our senses, as the images created by Alice acquire a new interpretative layer through Carlos’s interventions, creating new possibilities for reading a body suspended between figuration and abstraction, the known and the unknown, desire and repulsion — that is, at the very crossroads through which, according to Leiris, the erotic operates.

And the multiple interpretative layers of Na língua dos gestos, in my view, become explicit in the tongue-necklace developed by the pair. An ambiguous piece which, when glimpsed in passing, might also be understood as a nipple, or even a spurt of sexual fluid. It is precisely here that the interest of this collaboration lies, as all the pieces move along paths of ambiguity and ambivalence, constantly questioning the viewer about what is being seen. After all, intention resides not only in the person who creates, but also in the person who looks.

In this sense, Alice and Carlos are constantly playing with their viewer — the erotic, once again, implicated in new developments. Everything is given, yet at the same time nothing is given. Beyond the wearable objects, the exhibition unfolds into pieces that exceed the micro dimension of the body, placing it in another form of contact with itself. The large drypoint plate depicting an enlarged ear expands the gesture, both Alice’s and Carlos’s, and demands a new involvement between body and matter. A confrontation of force and surrender, body-to-body, knowing, recognising and unknowing one another.

The drawings on fabric, meanwhile, operate in the opposite direction. Made with charcoal on voile, the transparency and fading of the image incite another kind of sensuality through contact with the skin, once again bringing antagonistic sensations into tension and revealing the erotic within us.

From these contrasts, Na língua dos gestos emerges as a surprising development in the attempt to demystify the erotic as taboo, appearing as a delicious journey of discovery, experimentation, processes and gestures that awaken in us a desire for life, for creation, for self-knowledge, for touch, for the arousal-tension of body-matter-surface.
